API 5L Pipe is a type of carbon steel pipe which is widely used in oil and gas industry for transmission services. And for other fluids (not oil and gas) steam, water and mud etc.
The API 5L standard includes both welded and seamless steel pipes.
Common Welded Pipe Types
| Type | Description | Typical Diameter |
| ERW | Electric Resistance Welded | Less than 24 inches |
| DSAW / SAW | Double-sided or Submerged Arc Welded | Larger diameters, alternative to ERW |
| LSAW | Longitudinal Submerged Arc Welded (JCOE process) | Up to 48 inches |
| SSAW / HSAW | Spiral or Helical Submerged Arc Welded | Up to 100 inches |
Seamless pipes are also available for applications requiring higher pressure or corrosion resistance.
Seamless Pipe Types: Hot-rolled Seamless Pipe and Cold-rolled Seamless Pipe
Seamless steel pipes are most commonly used in small-diameter applications, typically under 24 inches. In practice, they are especially preferred for pipelines with diameters below 150 mm (6 inches) due to their superior strength, pressure resistance, and uniform structure.
In addition to standard small-size production, we also supply large-diameter seamless steel pipes to meet special engineering requirements.
Through the hot-rolled manufacturing process, seamless pipes can be produced up to a maximum outer diameter of 20 inches (508 mm). For larger specifications, we adopt a hot expansion process, which enables the production of seamless pipes up to 40 inches (1016 mm).
This advanced forming method ensures that even extra-large seamless pipes maintain:
Precise dimensional accuracy
Excellent mechanical performance
Stable pressure resistance
Reliable quality consistency
As a result, our seamless pipe solutions can support a wide range of demanding applications, from conventional industrial systems to large-scale energy and infrastructure projects.
API 5L includes Grade B, Api 5l X42 Pipe, Api 5l X46 Pipe, Api 5l X52 Pipe, Api 5l X56 Pipe, Api 5l X60 Pipe, Api 5l X65 Pipe, Api 5l X70 Pipe, and Api 5l X80 Pipe. As the grade increases, the requirements become stricter—particularly in terms of carbon equivalent and mechanical properties—to meet the demands of higher-pressure and more critical pipeline applications.
For the same grade, there are also differences between seamless and welded pipes in chemical composition. Welded pipes are typically subject to tighter limits on carbon and sulfur content to ensure better weldability and reliable performance under high-pressure service conditions.

Grade B: As-rolled, normalizing rolled, thermomechanical rolled/formed, normalized, normalized & tempered, or Q&T (SMLS by agreement)
X42–X70: As-rolled, normalizing rolled, thermomechanical rolled/formed, normalized, or normalized & tempered
PSL2

N (Normalized / Tempered): BN, X42N, X46N, X52N, X56N, X60N
Q (Quenched & Tempered): BQ, X42Q, X46Q, X56Q, X60Q, X65Q, X70Q, X80Q, X90Q, X100Q
M (Thermomechanical): BM, X42M, X46M, X56M, X60M, X65M, X70M, X80M
High-strength M: X90M, X100M, X120M
Note: In PSL2, the suffix (R, N, Q, M) is part of the grade designation.
PSL (Product Specification Level) is divided into PSL1 and PSL2, and can be understood as different quality levels.
The two differ not only in inspection requirements, but also in chemical composition and mechanical performance. Overall, PSL2 applies tighter controls to meet more demanding service conditions.
Impact Testing: Not required for PSL1; required for PSL2 (except X80 in certain cases)
Non-Destructive Testing (NDT): Not mandatory for PSL1; required for PSL2
NDT methods such as ultrasonic or radiographic testing are used to detect internal defects and ensure material integrity without damaging the pipe.
