I-Beam vs. Wide Flange Beam: A Practical Guide to Steel Beam Selection


Any infrastructure or facility project will almost certainly call for steel beams — and two of the most commonly specified types are I-beams and wide flange beams. People mix them up all the time, and it is easy to see why: they look similar at a glance and serve the same basic purpose. But knowing where they diverge starts with two basic terms. The flange is the horizontal part of the beam; the web is the vertical piece that holds the two flanges together. Once you have got that down, the rest falls into place.

What Is a Wide Flange Beam?

Often referred to as a W-beam, a wide flange beam has a cross-section that looks like a sideways H. The web can be the same width as the flange or even wider. You identify a W-beam by the first number in its designation, which tells you the nominal depth in inches, followed by the weight per foot. A W21x44, for instance, runs roughly 21 inches deep and tips the scales at 44 pounds per foot. Structurally, the web takes on shear forces while the flanges do the heavy lifting against bending.

What Is an I-Beam?

An I-beam gets its name from its cross-section, which resembles a capital I. The flanges are noticeably shorter than the web is tall, and that shape is what allows the beam to flex under heavy loads rather than snap. Compared with W-beams — which come in a much wider range of sizes and lengths — I-beams have a more limited catalog to choose from.

How to Choose Between the Two

Both beam types are dependable load-bearing members, but the right pick comes down to what your project actually needs.

Wide Flange Beams

Next to I-beams, W-beams feature broader flanges and a thicker web. That extra material translates into greater load capacity, and they are engineered for spans as long as 300 feet. They also have a beveled transition where the web meets the top and bottom flanges. In residential construction, lightweight wide flange beams have largely replaced I-beams as the go-to choice.

I-Beams

I-beams use thinner webs and tapered flanges, which keeps them relatively light. Their shorter profile makes them best suited for spans in the 33-to-100-foot range. One key manufacturing difference: where a wide flange beam is assembled from three connected metal components, an I-beam is rolled from a single piece of steel.
