What Is a Wide Flange Beam?
Often referred to as a W-beam, a wide flange beam has a cross-section that looks like a sideways H. The web can be the same width as the flange or even wider. You identify a W-beam by the first number in its designation, which tells you the nominal depth in inches, followed by the weight per foot. A W21x44, for instance, runs roughly 21 inches deep and tips the scales at 44 pounds per foot. Structurally, the web takes on shear forces while the flanges do the heavy lifting against bending.

What Is an I-Beam?
An I-beam gets its name from its cross-section, which resembles a capital I. The flanges are noticeably shorter than the web is tall, and that shape is what allows the beam to flex under heavy loads rather than snap. Compared with W-beams — which come in a much wider range of sizes and lengths — I-beams have a more limited catalog to choose from.
