Quotes across manufacturing methods can't be compared without the full spec — process, size range, wall thickness and testing can make the price gap misleading.
Quality control: agree before production starts
Confirm chemical composition, yield/tensile strength, hydrostatic test requirements, NDT, dimensions (OD, wall thickness, length, straightness, ends) and heat-number traceability. Get it all agreed before the mill run, not after.
Documents to request
MTC, chemical and mechanical test results, hydrostatic and NDT records, dimensional inspection records, heat-number traceability, packing list, commercial invoice and shipping documents. Ask up front what's included in the base price — not every supplier bundles the same package.
Comparing suppliers
Judge on six points, not just unit price: technical capability, quality control, capacity and lead time, documentation, export experience, and commercial reliability. The cheapest FOB quote often excludes inspection, testing or documentation — the lowest initial price rarely ends up the lowest total cost.
What drives the price
Grade, PSL level, diameter, wall thickness, manufacturing process, quantity, testing, third-party inspection, coating, packing, shipping method, destination and delivery schedule. Compare apples to apples.
Sourcing from China
Check product compliance, manufacturing capability, QC and traceability, inspection, documentation, lead time, export experience, packing and shipping. Give the mill the actual project spec rather than a product name — "API 5L" alone doesn't guarantee it fits your project.
