PSL 1 (Product Specification Level 1) : For pipelines built to a basic standard quality level.
PSL 2 (Product Specification Level 2) : Using higher mechanical properties, tighter chemical controls and NDT, more aggressive specification.
| Item | PSL1 | PSL2 | Notes |
| Chemical Composition Control | Standard limits on C, Mn, P, S | Stricter limits, lower P and S; additional microalloy element control allowed | PSL2 is more suitable for low-temperature and corrosive environments |
| Yield Strength (MPa) | According to grade specification | Same as PSL1; slightly higher for some high-grade steels | Basic mechanical requirements are similar |
| Tensile Strength (MPa) | According to grade specification | Same as PSL1 | |
| Elongation (%) | According to grade specification | Same as PSL1 | |
| Low-Temperature Impact (Charpy V-Notch) | Optional or per end-use requirement | Mandatory; typically tested at -20°C or -50°C | Enhances toughness at low temperature |
| Weldability | Meets standard requirements | Stricter, weldability tests often required | PSL2 demands higher weld performance |
| Dimensional Tolerance | Standard range | Stricter | PSL2 has tighter control on diameter and wall thickness |
| Defect Control / NDT | Standard inspection; UT/RT optional | Mandatory UT/RT/MPI | Ensures higher pipeline safety |
| Application Environment | General pipeline transportation | High-pressure, low-temperature, corrosive pipelines | PSL2 is preferred for projects with high safety requirements |
| Cost | Relatively lower | Slightly higher | Due to stricter inspection and manufacturing requirements |
| API 5L Steel Grade | Minimum Yield Strength | Typical Applications Across the Americas |
| Grade B | ≥ 245 MPa | Popular in low-pressure natural gas piping systems in North America, and for small oil and gas gathering lines in Central America. |
| X42 / X46 | ≥ 290 / 317 MPa | Popular in U.S. farm irrigation lines and city electrical beams in South America. |
| X52 (Primary Choice) | ≥ 359 MPa | Perfect for shale oil linework in Texas, onshore oil & gas gathering systems in Brazil, and cross-border natural gas pipelines in Central America. |
| X60 / X65 | ≥ 414 / 448 MPa | Often used for the medium- to high-pressure pipeline systems in the Gulf of Mexico and Canadian oil sands. |
| X70 / X80 | ≥ 483 / 552 MPa | Built for U.S. Long Distance Crude Oil Pipelines and Deepwater Offshore Oil & Gas in Brazil. |
Raw Material Inspection – Choose and inspect the good quality steel billets or coils.
Forming – Roll or pierce into pipe form (Seamless / ERW / SAW).
Welding –In-pipe joints are made by electric resistance welding or submerged arc welding.
Heat Treatment – Enhance strength and toughness by precise heating.
Sizing & Straightening – Modify the diameter of the tube and confirm the size is correct.
Non-Destructive Testing (NDT) – Inspect for inward and surface flaws.
Hydrostatic Test – Test each pipe for strength and leaks.
Surface Coating – Apply corrosion protection layer (black varnish, FBE, 3LPE, etc.).
Marking & Inspection – Mark the specifications and do the final quality inspections.
Packaging & Delivery – Pack, stack, and deliver with Mill Test Certificates.
Local Spanish Support
Our regional offices offer comprehensive Spanish support to facilitate communication and ensure a smooth import process.
Stable Inventory Supply
We maintain ample inventory for quick response and order processing.
Safe Packaging
Each pipe is bundled and wrapped with multiple layers of cushioning material to prevent bending and damage during transport.
Timely Global Logistics
We provide efficient international shipping services to meet your project's time and delivery requirements.
Packaging Guarantee
Our API 5L steel pipes are palletized (wooden pallets fumigated with IPPC which is the standard for Central America and meets all the phytosanitary requirements for export), then wrapped in six layers of plastic. Your pipe is individually packaged with three layers of waterproof membranes which due to the high humidity in the tropical rain forest are designed in such a way that moisture cannot get in. A high-strength plastic protective flag and plug are installed on the two ends of the pipe to prevent dust, impurities and foreign matter entering on transportation and storage in site, so as to keep the product clean and intact. Each pipe section weighs 2-3 tons, an ideal size and weight for the small cranes typically found on Central American job sites, this enables safer handling and more efficient construction.
Customizable Sizes to Your Needs
Lengths Meet ISO Standards
Standard pipe length is 12 meters, designed for container loading and international transport.
Short Pipe Options Available
We offer 8-foot and 10-foot sizes suitable for tropical climates with poor inland transport conditions, such as Guatemala and Honduras.
Flexible Specifications
We offer a variety of sizes to meet specific project needs, improving transport convenience and on-site installation efficiency.
One-Stop Export Documentation Support
To facilitate smooth customs clearance and project implementation in Central America, we can provide a full set of export and material certification documents, such as:
Certificate of Origin (Form B)
Worker Test Certificate (MTC)
SGS Inspection Report
Packing List
Commercial Invoice
If any documents are incorrect, we will reissue them within 24 hours to avoid delays in your project schedule and prevent inconvenience.
Professional Transport Arrangements
Once the shipment has been dispatched, the merchandise will be delivered to a neutral carrier by land and sea transportation combination mode, the transportation will be safe and reliable. The following are the primary routes of transportation and ETA:
China → Colon, Panama: ~30 days
China → Manzanillo, Mexico: Around 28 Days
China → Limon, Costa Rica: ~35days
In case of project requirements, we offer short-haul transportation services from ports to oil fields or job sites. For instance, with local logistics partner in Panama TMM, we provide end-to-end logistic solutions, delivering project material in a timely and safe manner.
1. Are your API 5L steel pipes up to date standards for the Americas market?
Surely our API 5L steel pipes are in full conformance with the latest API 5L 45th Revision which is the only edition acceptable by the authorities in the Americas (the US, Canada and Latin America)? They also comply with dimensional standards of ASME B36.10M and with local standards like NOM in Mexico and the free trade zone regulations in Panama. All the certificates (API, NACE MR0175, ISO 9001) can be checked on the official websites.
2. How to Select the Proper Size of API 5L Steel Grade for My Project (for example: X52 vs X65)?
Selection your pressure, medium and environment of project : For low pressure application(≤3MPa) such as municipal gas and agriculture irrigation, Grade B or X42 is economical. For medium-pressure oil/gas transmission (3–7MPa) in onshore fields (Texas shale, for example), X52 is easily the most versatile option. For high-pressure (≥7MPa) pipelines or offshore projects (Brazil’s deepwater fields, for instance), API 5L X65/API 5L X70/API 5L X80 are also recommended for high yield strength(448–552MPa). Our engineering team will offer you a free grade recommendation according to your project details.
