Steel Sheets Piles - Royal Steel Group

Steel sheet piles constitute the building blocks of earth-retaining systems such as waterfront bulkheads, cofferdams, seawalls and levees. They provide strength, stability, and water-tightness to construction projects for civil engineering, marine and industrial applications.

Shapes

Z-Type Sheet Piles
they interlock in a zig-zag pattern, giving a higher bending resistance.
Long walls with a need for a uniform, continuous structural strength can also benefit.

U-Type Sheet Piles (Larssen Piles)
They interlock with a u-profile, which allows for an easy installation and a high reusability.
Suitable for temporary works or small to medium scale permanent works.

Hot-Rolled & Cold-Rolled Processes

Hot-Rolled Sheet Piles
Produced at high temperature above recrystallization point.
High toughness, good ductility, large thickness options.
Ideal for heavy-duty permanent structures and marine applications.

Cold-Rolled Sheet Piles
Produced at room temperature for precise dimensions and smooth surfaces.
Moderate strength, high dimensional accuracy.
Suitable for temporary structures or lightweight walls requiring fast installation.

Material Grades

Steel sheet piles are manufactured according to various international standards:

Standard Common Grades Description
EN / European Standard S235, S275, S355 High-strength structural steel for civil engineering projects
ASTM / American Standard A572 Gr.50, A690, A690-50 Suitable for marine, coastal, and heavy-load applications
GB / Chinese Standard Q235, Q345, Q390 Widely used in domestic projects with strict quality control

Larssen Sheet Piles

Larssen Sheet Piles are the most widely used hot-rolled U-type steel sheet piles globally. Named after the classic Larssen interlock design, these piles are valued for their superior mechanical performance, water-tight sealing, and excellent reusability. They are core materials in foundation support, flood control, marine engineering, and river management projects.

Type Ⅱ (Type 2) steel sheet piles and Type Ⅳ (Type 4) steel sheet piles are the two most commonly used U-shaped hot-rolled steel sheet pile models among Larssen Sheet Piles. The numerical designations represent an increasing sequence of their cross-sectional dimensions, weight, and load-bearing capacity, and they are widely used in various foundation pit supports, seepage prevention and soil retaining, as well as hydraulic engineering projects.

Parameter Type Ⅱ (SP-Ⅱ) Type Ⅳ (SP-Ⅳ) Key Differences
Width (mm) 400 400 Same width for easy splicing and connection
Height (mm) 100 170 Type Ⅳ features a 70% increase in section height, which improves the section modulus
Thickness (mm) 10.5 15.5 Type Ⅳ has a 47.6% increase in thickness, enhancing overall structural strength
Unit Weight (kg/m) Approx. 61.2 Approx. 76.1 Type Ⅳ boasts a 24.3% weight increase, delivering stronger load-bearing capacity
Section Modulus (m³/m) Approx. 0.000874 Approx. 0.00134 Type Ⅳ realizes a 53.3% improvement in bending stiffness
