What Is OCTG? A Buyer’s Guide to Drill Pipe, Casing and Tubing


"OCTG" is one of those abbreviations people in oil and gas procurement throw around constantly, then still pause on when they have to explain it. It stands for Oil Country Tubular Goods: the family of steel pipes that gets a well drilled, holds it open, and carries the oil or gas back up to the surface. If you’re buying for a drilling program, this is one category where small spec mistakes turn into expensive ones, because the three main products (drill pipe, casing and tubing) do completely different jobs and aren’t interchangeable.

So here’s a practical rundown of what each one is, the standards and grades you’ll see on every quote, and what to check before you send your PO.

The three main types, at a glance

OCTG splits into three families, and it helps to think about them by the job they do, not just by their name:

Drill pipe: the working string that turns the bit and pumps drilling mud down the hole.

Casing: the permanent steel lining that keeps the wellbore open after drilling.

Tubing: the pipe inside the casing that carries production to the surface.

They’re all steel pipe, but that’s about where the similarity ends. Different loads, different standards, different service lives. Let’s take them one by one.

Drill pipe: the tool that does the drilling

Drill pipe is heavy, seamless tube, and its job is straightforward: rotate the drill bit and circulate drilling fluid. The mud gets pumped down through the pipe, out through the bit, and back up the annulus (the gap between the pipe and the wellbore).

Simple to describe, punishing to do. Drill pipe carries axial tension from its own weight, extreme torque when it turns the bit, and high internal pressure from the mud column. That’s why it’s built as the strongest member of the OCTG family, and why it’s normally specified to API 5DP or API SPEC 7-1 rather than the same standards as casing and tubing.

For most buyers, drill pipe is also the part you replace most often. Worth remembering when you’re weighing a cheap string against one that was properly inspected before it shipped.

Casing: the pipe that holds the well open

Casing is what turns a hole into a well. Once the borehole is drilled, casing is run in and cemented into place, and from then on it carries the weight, literally. It’s under axial tension from its own dead weight, external pressure from the rock around it, and internal pressure from the fluid in the hole.

Casing does four jobs at the same time:

1.Structural support. Keeps unstable upper formations from caving in and gives the wellbore its integrity during drilling and production.

2.Isolation. Separates different geological formations and stops fluids migrating between them, which also protects groundwater.

3.Protection. Gives production equipment a clean internal bore, keeps contaminants out of the well, and seals off high-pressure zones from the surface.

4.Production access. It’s the housing that lets you run tubing and other completion equipment down to the pay zone.

Casing is bought to API 5CT, and most specs revolve around a handful of grades: J55, K55, N80, L80, C90, T95 and P110. Standard length is R3, nominally 40 ft (about 12 m). Ends are usually BTC, LTC or STC, and more projects are adding premium connections on top of that.

One thing that catches first-time buyers off guard is the price. Casing typically runs a couple of hundred dollars per ton above a plain API 5L line pipe, roughly $200/ton more. Threading, coupling and heat treatment are real process costs, and they show up in the number.

Tubing: the pipe that brings production up

If casing is the skeleton of the well, tubing is the production line. It runs inside the casing and carries oil, gas or water from the reservoir up to the surface facilities, where it’s processed and stored. Of the three OCTG products, tubing is the simplest, normally supplied in 30 ft (9 m) segments with threaded connections at both ends.

It still has to earn its keep:

Fluid transport: the conduit that moves produced fluids from the reservoir to the surface.

Smaller diameter: tubing is narrower than casing, which keeps flow efficient and handling easy.

Pressure resistance: it has to hold up under production pressures, reliably and for years.

Easy maintenance: tubing is run inside casing, so it can be pulled and replaced for repairs without touching the well structure.

Production tuning: material and design can be matched to the specific producing conditions.

Tubing follows the same API 5CT grades as casing (J55, N80, L80, P110 and the rest), but diameters top out around 4-1/2". The ends come as EUE, NUE or BTC, with thickened EUE the most common choice. One manufacturing note: tubing gets an extra upsetting step so the pipe ends are thicker where the threads are cut, giving the connections enough metal to carry the load.

How casing and tubing work together

Think of the well as two nested pipes. Casing is the outer, permanent string. Set and cemented, it protects the well and isolates formations for the life of the well. Tubing is the inner, retrievable string that actually carries production. Casing takes the punishment from the formation; tubing takes the punishment from the flow. Most completions need both, and choosing them as a matched set is where the real engineering happens.

Grades that show up in most quotes

API 5CT defines grades by their mechanical properties, and the same short list shows up again and again. Here’s what the common ones mean in terms of strength:

What actually drives material quality

Two things decide whether an OCTG string survives its design life: hardness control and corrosion resistance.

Hardness is a standard requirement across the board. The main alloying elements are manganese and chromium, which give the steel the cohesion and durability it needs. But manganese and chromium on their own have a known weak point: sulfide stress cracking, the failure mode that has taken down a lot of sour-well strings over the years.

The fix the industry has settled on is molybdenum. By blending molybdenum into the alloy, manufacturers get past the chromium and manganese limits, and modern OCTG is both harder and far more resistant to sulfide stress cracking than anything from twenty years ago. If you’re buying for sour service, this is exactly the conversation to have with your supplier, and it’s worth asking what the mill actually does for heat treatment, not just what grade is stamped on the pipe.
