W10x22 Wide-Flange Beam: Dimensions, Grades, and Where It Gets Used

The W10x22 steel beam  is one of the most widely specified wide-flange beams in North American construction. Its nominal 10-inch depth and 22 lb/ft weight put it in a sweet spot — strong enough for floor and roof framing, light enough to keep material and erection costs down. At Royal Steel Group, we supply W10x22 beams in standard ASTM grades, cut to length and ready for fabrication.

Dimensions and Section Properties

Under AISC standards, the designation breaks down as follows: W = wide-flange shape, 10 = nominal depth in inches, 22 = weight in pounds per foot. The actual section dimensions used for design and detailing are:

Dimension Imperial Metric
Depth (d) 10.17 in 258.3 mm
Flange Width (b_f) 5.75 in 146.1 mm
Web Thickness (t_w) 0.24 in 6.1 mm
Flange Thickness (t_f) 0.36 in 9.1 mm
Cross-Sectional Area (A) 6.49 in2 4,187 mm2
Weight per Foot 22 lb/ft 32.7 kg/m

Available Steel Grades

We typically stock W10x22 beams in two grades:

ASTM A992 — the standard grade for building framing. Minimum yield strength 50 ksi (345 MPa), minimum tensile strength 65 ksi. A992 offers good weldability and ductility, and performs reliably under seismic loading.

ASTM A36 — a carbon structural steel with a 36 ksi (250 MPa) yield strength. It machines well and is commonly used for general-purpose and low-to-medium-load applications.

Both grades are readily weldable and suitable for standard fabrication processes.

Where W10x22 Beams Are Used

Floor and roof framing. In multi-family residential buildings and mid-rise commercial projects, W10x22 beams serve as floor joists and roof girders, spanning moderate distances and carrying concrete-on-metal-deck loads to columns or bearing walls.

Mezzanines and industrial platforms. Warehouses and manufacturing facilities use W10x22 beams to build mezzanine floors that support inventory, equipment, and forklift traffic without adding excessive dead load.

Light columns and bracing. For low-rise buildings, basements, and agricultural structures, the W10x22 works well as a column. Its balanced section also makes it suitable for lateral bracing against wind and seismic forces.

Equipment frames and trailer chassis. Outside of buildings, the W10x22 is used for flatbed trailer rails, generator skids, pump bases, and gantry crane runway beams — anywhere a strong, moderately sized section is needed.

Why Specify W10x22?

The W10x22 remains a standard choice because it balances load capacity, self-weight, and cost. It is widely available, easy to fabricate, and well-documented in AISC design tables — which means fewer surprises during detailing and erection.
