What Is Steel Plate?

Steel plate is flat-rolled steel with a minimum thickness of 3/16 inch; thinner flat steel is classified as sheet metal. Standard stock widths are 48”, 60”, 72”, and 96”, with standard lengths of 96”, 120”, and 240”. Custom cut sizes are available. Applications: Trailer bed decking, light fabrication brackets, gusset plates, machine guards, cover plates, and general shop projects
This is the most widely ordered range for general fabrication, with good workability for standard cutting, forming, and welding equipment.

Medium Plate (3/8” – 1/2”)

Weight: 15.32 – 20.42 lb per square foot
Applications: Structural base plates, equipment mounting pads, tank fabrication, agricultural machinery, truck frames, and structural connections
It delivers balanced load-bearing capacity without excessive weight or cost, making it ideal for most structural and equipment projects.

Heavy Plate (3/4” – 1”)

Weight: 30.63 – 40.84 lb per square foot
Applications: Heavy structural base plates, bridge components, crane supports, press beds, mining wear plates, and heavy equipment fabrication
Flame and plasma cutting are the most practical processing methods for plate 3/4 inch and thicker.

Extra-Heavy Plate (Over 1”)

Weight: 40.84+ lb per square foot
Applications: Pressure vessels, shipbuilding, heavy machinery foundations, industrial ballast, and large structural supports
Extended lead times are required for sourcing and processing. Flame cutting is recommended for optimal results.

Flame Cutting

The most practical and economical option for plate over 1 inch thick. CNC flame cutting systems process plate up to 5 inches thick with reliable accuracy for heavy industrial projects.

Saw Cutting

Produces clean, square straight edges for length trimming and sizing, commonly used for base plates, shims, and flat bar stock.
