Steel Plate Basics: How Steel Plates Are Made and What They’re Used For

Most people are familiar with beams, pipes, angles, coils, and rebar. Steel plates are about as simple as steel products get. But "simple" doesn't mean there's nothing to know. What separates a plate from sheet steel? How is plate steel actually made? And which grade should you spec for your project? We'll walk through all of it below.

What is a Steel Plate?

Steel plate is a flat rectangular steel product used in structural applications. Fabricators cut and reform them into all sorts of pieces, which is why plate is more often the beginning of a project than the end.

Steel Plate vs. Sheet Steel: What's The Difference?

The separation is mostly thickness. Steel is considered plate when it is over ¼ inch (6 mm) thick. Anything thinner is sheet steel.

Now there is an even easier way to tell them apart: plate is stacked and sheet steel is coiled.

How Steel Plates are Made

Most steel plates are manufactured by hot rolling. Steel slabs are heated to a high temperature until they become soft and then passed through a set of rollers to press and reduce their thickness to the required size. It is common for multi-layers to be compressed together to single plate In the process. When the thickness is right, the plate is cut to the size required for the job. The end result is a flat metal plate ready to be fabricated, or as customers say: flat bar." 

What are Steel Plates Used for?

The construction of steel plate covers bridges, warehouses, ships and road repairs and each of those applications has different requirements for the material. Here are some of the largest applications:

Bridge and building construction. Metal plates are also used to reinforce the foundation and anchor steel beams in warehouse and bridge-sized construction.

Military shielding. Steel plates form the basis for armored vehicles and structures to defend against bullets and other threats.

Shipbuilding. Steel plates are easy to weld and strong enough to bear heavy loads, so they are one of the most widely used materials in large ships.

Road plates. Steel plates are used during street repairs as a temporary driving surface, placed over potholes, trenches and holes.

Shipping containers. Steel ships carry 90% of our global cargo, and a good chunk of that cargo, containers included, is made from steel plates, thanks to its ability to endure years of salt, sun, and stacking, says the World Steel Organization. “While this measure does not include containers, which are a major part of cargo shipping, modules made from steel plates, makes sense for this.”

That’s the short list. Plates can also be found in the bases of machinery and equipment, reservoir tanks, dust and grain handling equipment, wheels, and even farming implements.

Steel Plate Grades

Forks are classified by the material and properties including strength and durability, and category of use. There are primarily three categories

Carbon steel: This is the most prevalent stuff, but it comes in low, medium, and high carbon grades, all of which are stronger or more ductile.

Alloy steel: Such steels contain additional alloying elements other than carbon to impart favorable properties such as increased toughness, wear resistance etc.

Stainless steel: Has at least 10.5% chromium, which makes a thin layer on the surface that prevents corrosion. The trade-offs are cost and the maintenance required to keep the surface looking right.

Tool steel: Also very hard, holds its shape well when heated and is very wear resistant. It’s this which makes it go to for hand tools and machine dies.

For fabricating steel plate, the thickness chart is generally where the brief is decided. Plates dimensions themself are listed by thickness so you can take the right plate for your work, and the weight limitations, strength needs, bending forces, and price all contribute.
