Steel Beams, Explained: Types, Parts, and How to Read a Beam Size


For first-time structural steel buyers — or even tenth-time buyers — beam designations can seem like a cryptic code. "W 27 x 178#." "S 24 x 121#." They are actually very easy to read once you know how: it's just a shape name and a weight. Which is the whole point of this guide.

What Exactly is a Steel Beam?

A steel beam is a long structural member — typically positioned horizontally, though occasionally in a slope — intended to bear load and channel that load down to the structure below. Beams are constructed from high tensile steel and they are used in numerous applications from building frameworks, bridges, to industrial applications of every kind.

You've almost certainly seen one. Look at a beam at the end and you can see the shape: it is like a wide I, or if you turn it an H. What is the most common shape for structural steel? The I beam has the shape that most people imagine when they think about steel construction.

There’s also the T-beam that is exactly what it sounds like. Split an I-beam in half vertically and each half becomes a tee — a pretty straightforward way to produce two smaller sections from one larger one.

Where Steel Beams Get Used

The entire purpose of a beam is to hold up heavy loads without bending or breaking, and that’s what makes them the work horses of building and civil engineering.Typical jobs include:

Commercial and Residential Buildings — floors, ceilings and roofs

Bridges and Overpasses — where capacity is king

Skyscrapers — as vertical columns and horizontal supports

Factories and Warehouses — in building frames and overhead systems

Parking Garages — supporting the weight of vehicles, day after day

Retail and Hospitality — cover wide open spaces without columns getting in the way

Stadiums and Arenas — large open spaces that require minimal — yet maximal — support

The Two Parts That Matter: Flange and Web

A beam's strength isn't only about the steel itself. A lot of it comes from the shape. Strip a beam down and you have two basic parts:

Flange The horizontal sections at the top and bottom (usually the wider parts) Resists the bending moment — the force that wants to fold the beam
Web The vertical section running between the two flanges Handles shear forces and carries vertical load

Flanges can have parallel or tapered edges depending on the beam type, and the web's thickness — plus the radius where it meets the flanges — varies from section to section. Together, the two parts give a beam real strength against bending and shear. The trade-off: beam shapes aren't great at resisting twisting, or torsional loads, so that's worth keeping in mind during design.

A few other dimensions shape how a beam performs:

Depth — the overall height from the top of the top flange to the bottom of the bottom flange. Deeper sections generally carry more load.

Thickness — of both the web and the flanges. This decides how much load a given section can handle.

Length — the horizontal span between supports.

Welds — where sections are joined, and where the integrity of the whole beam depends.

The Common Beam Types

Four profiles can cover almost all tasks when you're shopping for beams:

1. I-Beams (regular beams) — the classic shape, whose flanges taper and get thinner as they extend away from the web.

2. W-Beams (wide-flange beams) — the same concept behind an I-beam, but with wider flanges. That additional flange width is what allows they to carry heavier loads and higher forces.

3. H Piles — with flat and parallel flanges — are shaped like the letter H. They seem similar to I-beams thou at first different but that flange geometry is what makes the difference.

4. T-Beams — the half-beam section we discussed above. T-beams can be found in a wide array of Specify the grade, size and length of the T-beam.

How The Types Compare

The primary distinction between H piles and I-beams is the flanges. H piles have flanges that are flat and parallel the entire length; I-beam flanges are tapered and are thinner at the edges than they are at the web.

W-beams vs. I-beams is much simpler—it’s in the name. The W's flanges are significantly wider and that wide flange is precisely the reason why W-beams can support more weight and higher loads than regular I-beams or H piles. For heavy structural jobs, W-beams are typically the way to go.

How to Read a Steel Beam Size

Beam sizes are easy to understand and from what you learn here, there's no way you can un-know:

W 27 x 178#

The ' letter' identifies the shape. 'W' is for wide-flange, 'S' is for standard American beam, etc.

The 'section number' is the height of the beam in inches, that's the first number.

The 'second number' is the weight per unit foot in lbs.

Sometimes the length in feet is indicated with a third number.

So that W 27 x 178# is a wide flanag beam 27" tall, 178 pounds per linear foot.

This is not complicated, the math is simple. Let’s say you want a 40-foot section of that W 27 x 178# beam: 178 × 40 = 7,120 pounds for the beam. That’s a calculation you can do in your head before you make a call.

S 24 x 121#: 24 inches high, 121 pounds per foot. 40 feet: Around 4,840 pounds, you say?

You will most often use the height and the weight, but the full picture – flange width, web thickness, corner radii – can be found in the size chart. That’s the place to go when you need a particular section for a project design.
