What Is a C Strut Channel?

C-channel steel (also known as channel steel, slotted channel steel, or metal frame channel steel) is a profile formed by cold rolling of steel strip or coil. The most common cross-sectional size is 41×41 mm (1-5/8 inch × 1-5/8 inch), with other standard sizes including 41×21 mm, 41×62 mm, and 41×82 mm. Wall thickness typically ranges from 1.0 mm to 2.5 mm, and standard lengths are 3 meters and 6 meters.

The most distinctive feature of C-channel steel is the slotted grooves stamped on its web, allowing nuts, bolts, and other hardware to be secured in any position. Therefore, it is ideally suited for modular support systems: HVAC duct hangers, cable trays, pipe supports, seismic bracing, and solar panel mounting frames are just a few examples of the many common uses of C-channel steel. It can be finished uncoated, pre-galvanized, hot-dip galvanized (HDG), or powder-coated, and the material can be low-carbon steel, stainless steel, or aluminum.

What Is a U Steel Channel?

U-shaped steel channels, also known as U-shaped channel steel, U-section, or UPN channel steel, are hot-rolled structural profiles made by directly rolling steel billets at high temperatures. Their cross-section is U-shaped, with a flat web and two parallel flanges, but no back edge or notch. The height is typically 80 mm to 400 mm (UPN 80 to UPN 400), the flange width is 41 mm to 100 mm, and the web thickness is 4.5 mm to 12 mm.

U-shaped steel channels are manufactured using a hot-rolling process. As structural load-bearing components, they can withstand greater loads and are therefore used as primary or secondary structural steel, such as beams and columns, machine frames, bridge supports, crane rails, and heavy equipment foundations. Typical grades are S235JR, S275JR, or S355JR conforming to EN 10025, ASTM A36/A572, Q235/Q345, and SS400. UPN channel steel dimensions conform to EN 10034 / EN 10365 standards, and are available in sizes of 5.8 meters, 6 meters, 9 meters, 11.8 meters and 12 meters.
