Boiler Steel Pipe: Materials, Standards, Sizes, and Applications


Boiler steel pipe is seamless tubing made for high-temperature, high-pressure service in power plants and petrochemical facilities. It comes in two grades — medium-pressure and high-pressure — and in both cases the seamless process is used almost without exception. The reason is simple: under repeated thermal cycling, a welded seam is a weak point that can fail, and for critical boiler duty that risk isn't acceptable.

These pipes do the heavy work in heat exchanger tubing, tube bundles, economizers, superheaters, high-pressure boiler circuits, and petrochemical piping. They run hot, so the material has to hold its mechanical properties and resist oxidation over a long service life. Design and production follow ASTM, ASME, DIN, and EN specifications, which control metallurgical quality, dimensional accuracy, and pressure tolerance against a written standard rather than shop practice.

Materials and Standards

Boiler pipe is supplied in carbon steel, alloy steel, and stainless steel.

Carbon steel: ASTM/ASME A/SA 106, ASTM A179, ASTM A192, ASTM/ASME A/SA 210, ASTM A333 Gr 1, 6, 7 to Gr 9

Alloy steel: ASTM/ASME A/SA 213 T1, T2, T5, T9, T11, T12, T22, T91, T92; ASTM A335 P1, P2, P5, P9, P11, P12, P22, P91, P92

Stainless steel: ASTM A268, ASTM A213, TP304/L, TP316/L, 310S, 309S, 317, 317L, 321, 321H, and duplex stainless steel

These standards set the classification, size, shape, weight, allowable deviation, technical requirements, inspection and testing, packaging, marking, and quality certificate for seamless boiler tubes.

Common sizes: outside diameter 6 mm to 1240 mm, wall thickness 1 mm to 50 mm.

Types: straight boiler pipe, and U-shaped boiler pipe for tube exchanger bundles.

Boiler Pipe Sizes in Practice

The practical size range depends on the standard — ASTM A106, A179, A192, and so on each cover their own range. In practice, most boiler pipe is small. Outside diameters usually sit below 1 1/2", with the common range at 1/4", 1/2", 3/4", 1", and 1 1/2". Above that come 2", 2 1/2", and 3", with 4" as a practical upper limit.

Medium-Pressure vs High-Pressure Boiler Pipe

Which grade to use comes down to working temperature.

General boiler pipe operates below 450°C. Medium-pressure pipe in this range is usually made by hot rolling or cold drawing.

High-pressure boiler pipe works in higher-temperature, higher-pressure service. Hot flue gas and steam attack the pipe surface, causing oxidation and corrosion, so the material has to offer high long-term (creep) strength, good oxidation and corrosion resistance, and a stable microstructure. Those properties decide how long the pipe holds up in service.

Manufacturing Methods

Medium- and high-pressure boiler pipe is made the same way as other seamless pipe, with a few process steps worth noting: fine drawing, surface brightening, hot rolling, cold drawing, and heat expansion.

Heat Treatment

Heat treatment changes the physical properties of the pipe by heating and cooling, refining the microstructure to reach the required toughness, hardness, and wear resistance. Three treatments are most common:

Quenching (hardening). The pipe is heated evenly to the right temperature, then cooled quickly in water or oil, or in air or a freezing zone. The goal is to reach the required hardness.

Tempering. Hardened pipe turns brittle, and the stress left by quenching can crack it. Tempering removes that brittleness. Hardness drops slightly, but toughness improves and the pipe stops being brittle.

Annealing. Annealing relieves internal stress. The part is heated to the critical temperature, then cooled slowly in dry ash, lime, or asbestos, or sealed in the furnace.

Surface Preparation and Rust Removal

Cleaning. Solvents and emulsions remove oil, grease, dust, lubricant, and similar organics. They won't touch rust, oxide scale, or welding residue, so cleaning is a supplementary step, not a stand-alone treatment.

Tool removal. Wire brushes and similar tools grind off loose or lifting scale, rust, and welding slag. Manual tools reach SA2; power tools reach SA3. If iron oxide scale is firmly bonded to the surface, tooling won't produce the anchor profile the coating needs.

Acid cleaning. Pickling is done by chemical or electrolytic methods.

Spray (abrasive) blasting. Blasting removes rust, oxide, and dirt completely and gives the surface a uniform roughness. It improves both the physical adsorption of the coating and the mechanical bond between coating and pipe. For corrosion protection, it's the preferred method.

A boiler is only as reliable as its tubing. Pipe that resists creep, oxidation, and thermal fatigue through years of pressure and temperature swings keeps a plant running. When that pipe fails, the plant stops — and the cost goes well beyond the pipe itself.
