Material make-up:

Alloy tool steel is a form of carbon tool steel that has various alloying materials such as silicon (Si), manganese (Mn), nickel (Ni), chromium (Cr), tungsten (W), molybdenum (Mo), and vanadium (V) added to the base-carbon.

Hardenability is also increased with chromium and manganese; the other elements may be individually or collectively introduced in quantities (usually not more than 5 percent) to produce different alloy tool steels for various uses.

Alloy Steel Rod Production Process

Raw Material Preparation

Selection of high-quality steel billets and alloying elements (Si, Mn, Ni, Cr, Mo, W, V) based on the target steel grade (e.g., Cr12, Cr12MoV).

Weighing and mixing of alloying elements to achieve precise chemical composition.

Melting and Refining

Electric Arc Furnace (EAF) or Induction Furnace (IF) is used to melt steel billets.

Refining processes such as vacuum degassing or ladle metallurgy remove impurities and ensure uniform composition.

Casting

Continuous casting or ingot casting to form billets with uniform cross-section.

Cast billets are allowed to cool to prepare for rolling.

Heating and Forging/Rolling

Billets are preheated in a furnace to the required temperature for hot working.

Hot forging or hot rolling is performed to reduce cross-section and improve internal structure, achieving desired shape and mechanical properties.

Heat Treatment

Normalization: Refines grain structure and improves uniformity.

Quenching: Rapid cooling to achieve high hardness.

Tempering: Relieves internal stress and improves toughness.

Optional sub-zero treatment may be applied to enhance dimensional stability and hardness.

Straightening and Cutting

Straightening machines ensure rods are uniform and free from bends or warping.

Rods are cut to specified lengths according to customer requirements.

Surface Finishing

Polishing or grinding to achieve smooth surface finish, reduce friction, and improve dimensional accuracy.

Inspection for surface defects to ensure quality compliance.
