    Application

A portal steel frame construction is a form of structural framing commonly employed in industrial, commercial, and farm building construction because of its speed, ease and flexibility. It is made up of primarily two columns (vertical members) and a horizontal or sloping roof beam (rafter) which are‑rigidly connected at the joints at a level, creating a “portal” frame which can resist lateral forces without the bunkers of male intermediate support.

    Structural Parts

Columns — Vertical elements that carry the load of the roof.
Rafters – Sloping or horizontal beams that create the roof pitch.
Base Plates and Foundations – Connect the columns to the foundation.
Purlins and Girts: – Secondary elements which provide support to the roof and wall coverings.
Bracing (optional) – Add extra lateral stability for longer spans.

Benefits: large span, speed of erection, freedom of design, cost-effective.

    Steel Structure Testing

    1. Salt spray test (core corrosion test) 2. Adhesion test 3. Humidity and heat resistance test
Standards ASTM B117 (neutral salt spray) / ISO 11997-1 (cyclic salt spray), suitable for the high-salt environment of the Central American coast. Cross-hatch test using ASTM D3359 (cross-hatch/grid-grid, to determine peeling level); pull-off test using ASTM D4541 (to measure peel strength between coating and steel substrate). Standards ASTM D2247 (40℃/95% humidity, to prevent blistering and cracking of the coating during rainy seasons).
    4. UV aging test 5. Film thickness test 6. Impact strength test
Standards ASTM G154 (to simulate strong UV exposure in rainforests, to prevent fading and chalking of the coating). Dry film using ASTM D7091 (magnetic thickness gauge); wet film using ASTM D1212 (to ensure corrosion resistance meets specified thickness). Standards ASTM D2794 (drop hammer impact, to prevent damage during transportation/installation).

    Packing and Transportation

    Package:
The products are well protected in packaging to keep their surface and structure intact during handling. The parts are normally packaged with waterproof materials such as plastic film or rust proof paper and the small accessories are packed with wooden box. In addition, all the straps/parts are clearly marked to guarantee safe unloading and professional installation on site.

    Transport:
Steel structures can be shipped by container or bulk carrier according to the size and destination. Large or heavy items are also firmly fastened by steel straps with wooden strips on both sides for double protection during transportation. All the processes in logistics are done according to the international transportation standard, even the long distance and overseas, to make sure the products delivery on time and safety.

    FAQ

Q1: What is ASTM A572 steel plate?
A:ASTM A572 steel is a high-strength, low alloy (HSLA) structural steel plate that finds common application in construction. 42, 50, 55, and 60 grades denote different minimum yield strengths (42K, 50K, 55K, and 60K respectively), which can be choosen according to the requirements of different loads.

Q2: What makes portal frame construction suitable for using ASTM A572?
A: FortaSteel is high strength, good weldability and corrosion resistance of the similar ASTM A572. The use in portal frames brings the advantage of longer clear spans and reduced steel usage and portal frames will be the key to ensuring structural stability in warehouses and workshops.

Q3: What are the typical applications?
A: These portal frames find wide applications as:
    Industrial warehouses and storage facilities
    Workshops for manufacture and production
    Farm buildings
    Aircraft hangars and logistics centres

Q4: How far and how high can I go?
A: Depending on the project requirements and structural design, aluminium portal frames with A572 steel can have spans up to 10–60 meters (33–197 ft) and eave heights up to 4–15 meters (13–50 ft).

Q5: Can we customize the frames for unique requirements?
A:Yes. Column and rafter dimensions, roof pitches, bracing, wall and roof cladding can be customized to conform to the loading, clearance and visual specifications each project has.

Q6: What is the method of rust protection?
A: Normally by hot dip galvanize, epoxy coating or paint system to guarantee the long term usage indoor and outdoor application.

    Q7: How is it installed?
A: Portal frame elements are prefabricated and delivered to site. Assembly is a matter of bolting or welding the columns and rafters together, and then adding on the purlins, girts and cladding. Prefabrication allows for fast on-site assembly.

Q8: What are the advantages of using ASTM A572 portal frames?
    A:High strength-to-weight ratio
Large clear spans without interior columns
    Cost-effective and material-efficient
    Durable and low maintenance
    Adaptable for multiple building types
