UPN Channel: Meaning, Profile, Types, and Applications Explained

In steel building and industrial assembly, channel sections are popular options for strength, adaptability and ease of use. Among them, the UPN channel is one of the most popular European standard channel profiles. Knowing what is UPN and its applications, or how is UPN different from other U channels can help engineers, constructors and purchasers for choosing the right steel section.

What Does UPN Stand for in Steel?

UPN originates from the French terminology:
U = U-section (U geformter Querschnitt)
P = Profile (section)
N = Normal (regular series)

Hence, UPN refers to an “U shaped standard channel section.”
It is made to comply with European standards (for instance EN 10279 / DIN 1026) and belongs to the traditional “parallel flange” channel group.

UPN channels have:
A U-shaped cross section
Inner flanges are tapered slightly (not exactly parallel)
The height, flange width and thickness are all standardised.

They are normally described as follows:
UPN 80, UPN 100, UPN 160, UPN 200 etc., where the number indicates the nominal height in mm.

What Is the UPN Profile of a Beam?

The UPN profile is a U-shape channel with the following elements:
one vertical web (middle vertical part)
Two flanges on one side which outwardly flanges.
Tapered flanges on their interior surface

Main profile qualities:
Open (not box or tube closed)
Good vertical bending strength
Simpler to mate with bolts, welds, and brackets
More lightweight than I or H beams of comparable height

Due to this profile, UPN sections are suitable for secondary frameworks, joists and supporting components, where the full capacity of an I-beam is not needed.

What Are UPN Channels Used For?

UPN profiles are popular in the building of machines, vehicles and industrial equipment such as:

Building and Construction
Steel frames and sub-frames
Wall and roof joists
Stair stringers
Lintels and small beams

Industrial and Mechanical Uses
Machine frames and bases
Equipment supports
Conveyor structures
Racks and platforms

Infrastructure and Fabrication
Bridge secondary members
Handrails and guardrails
Steel brackets and frames

Their advantages include:
Easy cutting, drilling, and welding
Good strength-to-weight ratio
More economical than heavier beam sections
Readily available in standard sizes

What Are the Different Types of U Channels?

U channel steel is divided into several world-wide standard profiles:

UPN Channels (European Standard)
Tapered inner flanges
Standardized according to EN/DIN
Sizes like UPN 80, 100, 120, 160, 200, etc.

UPE Channels (Europe Parallel Flange)
The flanges are actually parallel
Faster for bolting and connections
Sometimes saved in modern steel design

UPA Channels
Light variant of UPN
Utilized when less load bearing is sufficient

American Standard Channels (C Channels)
“C” denotes that it is a channel section and is a somewhat standard product in the US.
Labeled as C6x8.2, C8x11.5 etc
Conform to ASTM/AISC

Japanese and Asian Standards
JIS channels (like C100, C150)
GB channels in China

All types have a subtly different geometry, tolerances, and load performance, and so engineers need to choose the appropriate standard for their project dependent on local codes and project specifics.

Why UPN Channels Still Matter Today

Nowadays parallel flange sections are preferable but UPN channels are still popular because they are:

  • cost effective and readily available
  • easy to fabricate and to put up
  • Adequate for light and medium structural loads
  • Compatible with many conventional European systems

From houses to machinery frames, UPN channels are still dependable and cost-effective solution for steel structural engineering.
