Steel grating — often called bar grating or metal grating — is one of the most widely used open-grid products in industrial construction. In its most common form it is a welded grid of flat bearing bars and smaller cross bars, joined at right angles to form a panel that is strong enough to walk on, yet open enough to let light, air, heat and liquid pass through.

What Is Steel Grating?

Steel grating is built from load-carrying bearing bars, spaced at regular intervals and joined at 90 degrees by cross bars. In welded grating, every joint is fused in production, which keeps the panel rigid enough to span open areas without flexing or sagging.

Because most of the surface is open space, a grating panel does three jobs at once:

It lets water, oil and debris fall through, so walkways stay cleaner and less slippery.

It admits natural light and ventilation to the space below — an advantage in pits, basements and covered drains.

It stays light: a grating panel weighs a fraction of a solid steel plate with similar strength.

Carbon Steel Bar Grating

Plain carbon steel grating is the workhorse of the range. It offers the best balance of strength, cost and availability, which is why it is the default for general industrial projects where corrosion resistance is not the deciding factor. It is available in a range of bearing-bar sizes and spacings, and can be left untreated or finished with paint. For interior floors, mezzanines, storage racks and machine platforms, plain carbon steel is usually all a project needs.

Galvanized Steel Grating

When grating will sit outdoors, get wet, or face constant foot and wheel traffic, galvanizing is the sensible upgrade. Hot-dip galvanizing immerses the finished panel in molten zinc, leaving a tough, corrosion-resistant coating that protects the steel far longer than paint alone. Galvanized grating is the standard choice for docks, trench covers, wash racks, maintenance platforms and any area where rust is an ongoing problem. Wear-resistant painted finishes are also available when you need color coding or a specific look.

Serrated Steel Grating

Serrated grating has a notched, tooth-like profile cut into the top edge of each bearing bar. The added surface grip makes it noticeably safer underfoot — especially on stairs, ramps, catwalks and platforms where oil, water or dust can make smooth steel slippery. It is widely used for stair treads, mezzanine edges, drainage pit covers, fencing, ventilation screens, window and machinery guards, and heavy equipment areas. Serrated panels are commonly supplied galvanized for outdoor duty.

Aluminum Grating

Where weight matters, aluminum grating comes into its own. It is roughly one-third the weight of steel for a similar profile, with excellent natural corrosion resistance — a strong fit for marine environments, food processing, chemical plants and rooftop installations. Aluminum costs more per panel than carbon steel, but it saves on handling, installation and long-term maintenance.

Heavy-Duty Steel Grating

For surfaces that carry vehicles rather than people, heavy-duty grating uses thicker bearing bars and closer spacing to handle wheel loads and impact. It is specified for highways, airport runways, bridge floors, railway crossings and other high-traffic areas where a standard panel would flex or fail. 3. Watch the slip factor. Stairs, ramps and wet areas should use serrated grating.

4. Mind the span. Longer unsupported spans need thicker bearing bars — give the engineer the real span, not the overall sheet length.

5. Specify the standard. Name the material grade and finish standard (for example, bearing bars in ASTM A36, hot-dip galvanized to ASTM A123) so every panel is verifiable on arrival.
