Introduction to Hot-Rolled Steel Coils: Properties & Uses

Introduction to Hot-Rolled Steel Coils
Hot-rolled steel coils are a vital industrial product made by heating steel slabs above the recrystallization temperature (typically 1,100–1,250°C) and rolling them into continuous strips, which are then coiled for storage and transportation. Compared with cold-rolled products, they have better ductility and cost-effectiveness, making them widely used in various industries globally.

Production Process
The production of Hot Rolled Carbon Steel Coil involves four key steps. First, slab heating: Steel slabs are heated in a walking beam furnace to ensure uniform temperature. Second, rough rolling: The heated slabs are rolled into intermediate billets with a thickness of 20–50mm by roughing mills. Third, finish rolling: Intermediate billets are further rolled into thin strips (1.2–25.4mm thick) by finishing mills. Finally, coiling & cooling: The hot strips are cooled to a suitable temperature and coiled into coils by a downcoiler.

Common Materials in Southeast Asia

Material Grade Main Components Key Properties Typical Uses
SS400 (JIS) C, Si, Mn High strength, good weldability Construction, machinery frames
Q235B (GB) C, Mn Excellent formability, low cost Bridges, storage tanks
A36 (ASTM) C, Mn, P, S High toughness, corrosion resistance Shipbuilding, automotive parts

Common Sizes
The common thickness range of HR Steel Coils is 1.2–25.4mm, and the width is usually 900–1,800mm. The coil weight varies from 10 to 30 tons, which can be customized according to customer requirements.

Packaging Methods
To ensure transportation safety, hot-rolled steel coils are packaged carefully. They are first wrapped with waterproof kraft paper, then covered with a polyethylene film to prevent moisture. Steel strips are used to fix the coils on wooden pallets, and edge protectors are added to avoid edge damage.

Application Scenarios
Construction Industry: Used to make steel beams, columns, and floor slabs for high-rise buildings and factories.
Automotive Industry: Manufactures chassis frames and structural parts due to good strength.
Pipeline Industry: Produces large-diameter steel pipes for oil and gas transportation.
Home Appliance Industry: Makes outer casings of refrigerators and washing machines for cost-effectiveness.

As a cornerstone product in the global manufacturing and construction sectors, Carbon Steel Coils stand out for their balanced performance, cost advantages, and wide adaptability—traits that make them particularly well-suited to Southeast Asia’s booming infrastructure and industrial needs. Whether you require SS400 for construction projects, Q235B for storage tanks, or A36 for automotive parts, our hot-rolled steel coils meet strict quality standards, with customizable sizes and reliable packaging to ensure safe delivery.
