ASTM A992, A572, A283, A913 Steel Structure: Key Differences in the Global Steel Structure Market

Today, choosing the appropriate grade of steel is crucial to the structural integrity, fabrication, and overall project cost in the construction industry. Under American standards there are four common grades of structural steel ASTM A992, A572, A283 and A913 each of these steels have different levels of performance and project requirements.

Material and Mechanical Differences

ASTM A992
Category: High-strength low- alloy (HSLA) structural steel
Minimum stress: 345 MPa (50 ksi) yield strength
Characteristic: Composition of weld “maker and stress related weld consumables” is tightly controlled to ensure conformability and toughness.
Main Form: Specifically made for hot roll wide flange (W/H beam).
A992 is the standard high-strength steel in North America for building frame steel construction.

ASTM A572
Category: High-strength low alloy (HSLA) structural steel
Grades:42, 50, 55, 60, 65
Level of strength: Greater than regular carbon steel.
Supply: Plates, angles, channels, beams and more
Lower grades (Grade 42,50) can be welded with normal welding procedures, Upper grades (Grade 65) need special welding procedures or extra examination such as PWHT etc.

ASTM A283
Type: Carbon structural steel (mild steel)
Grades: A B C D =Available
Strength: Weaker than A572 and A992
You could say it was like forming and welding a baby elephant for the price of an adult elephant.
Only light-duty or.General ASTM A283 is intended for use with non-critical structures.

ASTM A913
Type: High-strength low-alloy steel by QST (quenching and self-tempering) method
Grades: 50, 65, 70 =Available
Feature: Great strength, outstanding toughness and good weldability in an ultra-high strength steel.
Main Form For Thick and Heavy wide flange beams
A913 is predominantly used where high strength and leaner sections are vital in massive and tall steel determined structures.

Application Differences

ASTM A992
Commercial and house steel buildings
Frames for high-rise and mid-rise buildings
Industrial and distribution buildings
Reason: It can be securely relied on and welds easily, used on the body of the car.

ASTM A572
Bridges
Factories
Towers & energy facilities
Heavy platforms
Reason : Design engineers can optimize the balance between strength and cost with multiple grades.

ASTM A283
Low rise buildings
Light steel sheds and workshops
Farms and temporary structures
Non-critical components
Reason: It is cheap and easy material handling, but with a little carrying capacity.

ASTM A913
Skyscrapers
Long-span bridges
Stadiums and trade halls
Heavy industrial projects
Reason: Slimmer members and longer spans can be achieved with very high strength.

Market and Regional Preference

ASTM A992 Steel Structure: Available in the United States and Canada, Middle East, Southeast Asia for Building Frame.

ASTM A572 Steel Structure: Preferred in Sphere of Americas and Infrastructure Oriented Regions like Bridges and Heavy Structures.

ASTM A283 Steel Structure: Widely used in the third-world for economical and light construction.

ASTM A913 Steel Structure: Mainly applied in developed countries and mega-project domain like USA,Europe,Middle East,East Asia.

Cost and Economic Considerations

A283: Low price and low quality

A992: Moderate in cost, good balance of strength and ease of fabrication

A572: Cost depends on grade

A913: Highest per unit cost, but high strength reduces total steel tonnage

High-strength steels can reduce total project costs by reducing material, transportation and installation quantities.

Fabrication and Welding

A283: Easy to cut and weld

A992: Engineered to be welded for structural

A572: Weldable, but tighter control is required for higher grades

A913: An innovative technique which permits good weld ability at very high strength levels.

Summary and Comparison

Standard Strength Level Typical Use Cost Level Hot Markets
ASTM A992 High Buildings, frames Medium USA, Middle East, SE Asia
ASTM A572 Medium–High Bridges, plants Medium–High Americas, Infrastructure regions
ASTM A283 Low Light structures Low Africa, South Asia, Central America
ASTM A913 Very High Skyscrapers, mega projects High USA, Europe, Middle East, East Asia

ASTM A283, A992, A572 and A913 are four grades of performance for structural steel. A283 is for economy sake, A992 is the default building frame, A572 offers a range of strength options for infrastructure and A913 is the best value for heavy and high end structural applications. Increasingly intense construction projects are causing a general migration toward higher-strength structural steels in the international market.
