In September, China and Russia signed an agreement for the Power of Siberia-2 natural gas pipeline. The pipeline, to be built through Mongolia, aims to supply natural gas from Russia's western gas fields to China. With a designed annual transmission capacity of 50 billion cubic meters, it is expected to be operational around 2030.
Power of Siberia-2 is more than just an energy pipeline; it is a strategic lever for reshaping the global order. It undermines Western energy hegemony, deepens strategic cooperation between China and Russia, and invigorates regional economic vitality. It also provides a practical example of win-win cooperation in a multipolar world. Despite facing multiple technical, geopolitical, and ecological challenges, the project's strategic value transcends commercial boundaries, becoming a landmark project in promoting the building of a community with a shared future for mankind. As Putin said at the signing ceremony, "This pipeline will bind our futures together."
As a foreign trade company specializing in oil pipelines and specialty steel, Royal Steel Group is deeply involved in the "Power of Siberia 2" natural gas pipeline project, while also supporting energy cooperation and regional development policies among China, Russia, and Mongolia.

X80 steel is a benchmark for high-strength pipeline steel, complying with the API 5L 47th edition standard. It offers a minimum yield strength of 552 MPa, a tensile strength of 621-827 MPa, and a yield-to-strength ratio of 0.85 or less. Its core advantages lie in lightweight design, excellent toughness, and optimized weldability.
Typical applications include:
The China-Russia East Line Natural Gas Pipeline: Utilizing X80 steel throughout, it transmits 38 billion cubic meters of gas annually and traverses permafrost and seismically active areas, setting a global benchmark for onshore pipeline construction technology.
West-East Gas Pipeline III Project: X80 steel pipes account for over 80% of the total usage, supporting the efficient transportation of natural gas from western China to the Yangtze River Delta region.
Deepwater oil and gas development: In the Liwan 3-1 gas field project in the South China Sea, X80 seamless steel pipes are used for submarine pipelines at water depths exceeding 1,500 meters, with an external compressive strength of 35 MPa.
X90 steel represents the third generation of high-strength pipeline steels, complying with the API 5L 47th edition standard. It has a minimum yield strength of 621 MPa, a tensile strength of 758-931 MPa, and a carbon equivalent (Ceq) of 0.47% or less. Its core advantages include higher strength reserves, breakthrough weldability, and low-temperature adaptability.
Typical application cases include:
Power of Siberia 2 Pipeline: As the core material of the project, X90 steel pipe will carry out long-distance gas transportation from Russia's West Siberian gas fields to North China. Upon commissioning in 2030, the annual gas transmission volume is expected to account for over 20% of China's total pipeline gas imports.
Central Asia Natural Gas Pipeline Line D: In the highly saline soil areas of the Uzbek section, X90 steel pipe, combined with a 3PE + cathodic protection system, has its service life extended to 50 years.
The 3PE coating consists of an epoxy powder coating (FBE) primer, an adhesive intermediate layer, and a polyethylene (PE) topcoat, with a total thickness of ≥2.8mm, forming a "rigid + flexible" composite protection system:
The FBE base layer, with a thickness of 60-100μm, chemically bonds to the steel pipe surface, providing excellent adhesion (≥5MPa) and cathodic disbondment resistance (peel radius ≤8mm at 65°C/48h).
Intermediate Adhesive: 200-400μm thick, made of modified EVA resin, physically entangles with FBE and PE, with a peel strength of ≥50N/cm to prevent interlayer separation.
Outer PE: ≥2.5mm thick, made of high-density polyethylene (HDPE), with a Vicat softening point ≥110°C and UV aging resistance proven by a 336-hour xenon arc lamp test (tensile strength retention ≥80%). Suitable for use in Mongolian grasslands and permafrost environments.
Royal Steel Group, with its mission of "Material Innovation Driving the Energy Revolution," continues to provide high-performance, highly reliable steel pipe products and technical services for global energy infrastructure construction.
